Compress an image to an exact size

Job portals, visa forms and exam registrations often reject photos over 20, 50 or 100 KB. Set the limit, choose your image and download a copy that fits, without uploading it anywhere.

Compress an image to a size limit

How it gets under the limit

The tool decodes your image in the browser and re-encodes it as JPEG or WebP. It first tries high quality; if the file is still too large it searches for the highest quality setting that fits the limit, measuring the real file size each time. If even low quality is too big, it reduces the pixel size by 15 percent and tries again. You get the sharpest image that still fits, not a blurry guess.

Everything happens on your device. Your photo is not sent to a server, which matters for ID photos, signatures and scanned documents.

Choosing the right settings

  • Size limit: enter the maximum the form accepts. Many forms count 1 KB as 1,024 bytes, and so does this tool, so the result will pass their check.
  • JPEG or WebP: JPEG is accepted everywhere. WebP gives a smaller file at the same quality but some older forms reject it.
  • Maximum width or height: if a form also asks for dimensions (for example 600 × 600 px for a passport-style photo), set it here first. Smaller dimensions leave more room for quality.

Tips for ID and document photos

Crop to the face or document before compressing; every pixel of background costs bytes. Even, bright light without shadows compresses better than a dark, noisy photo. For scanned text, a slightly lower resolution with high quality usually reads better than full resolution at very low quality. PNG screenshots with large flat areas can often be kept as PNG instead; this tool converts to JPEG or WebP because those formats can be tuned to a target size.

Questions

Is my image uploaded?

No. It is processed by your browser and never leaves your device.

Why is the result a JPEG when I uploaded a PNG?

PNG has no quality setting, so it cannot be tuned to a size. JPEG and WebP can.

What if my form needs exactly 20 KB?

Forms state a maximum. Set 20 KB and the tool returns the best image at or below 20 KB.
